But first, let’s introduce ourselves.
Kia ora! We are Nīkau Foundation - Te Upoko-o-te-Ika-a-Māui, the Greater Wellington region’s community foundation.
Our story started in 1991 when a group of passionate Wellingtonians got together to discuss how they could grow support for the causes, people and places of our region, long-term. They wanted to provide a practical, powerful way for locals to contribute to their communities, ensuring the generosity of today could continue to make a difference long into the future.
Today, we are the proud kaitiaki of over 100 funds that have been set up by individuals, couples, families, charitable trustees and for-purpose organisations to support different causes throughout our region. These include The Blake Fund, which supports our region’s youth, the Chris Thomas Fund, which helps our natural environment to flourish and the Laurie Bushell Fund, which supports our region’s dynamic arts sector.
To date, we have given out over $11 million to hundreds of organisations doing good mahi to support our communities. Together, we can continue to grow this precious taonga for our communities, for our region’s next chapter and for future generations
