Funding Hub

Nikau Foundation is Te Upoko-o-te-Ika-a-Māui, the Greater Wellington region’s community foundation. As a community foundation, we are not about a single cause - we are about our region, our people and our places. With a long-term giving model, we are proud to work alongside donors to ensure the causes close to their hearts are supported long into the future while remaining responsive to local challenges as the world changes and as new generations grow old.

In 2025, we were proud to reach the milestone of delivering over $10,000,000 in transformative support to organisations doing good mahi across our region. Alongside granting from our own endowment funds, we are also proud to work alongside The Tindall Foundation as their Local Donation Manager for Wellington, Porirua, the Kāpiti Coast and Hutt Valley, and Perpetual Guardian to grant from the Henry and Eileen Wise Medical Trust and Richard and Doreen Evans Charitable Trust.

Key Dates

  • Nikau has one contestable Grants Round a year. Although this previously launched this in February, our next contestable Grants Round will launch in mid-2026 due to recent changes in our annual calendar. To find out more about these changes, please click here.

  • Alongside our contestable funding, we also grant from certain funds outside of this period. This allows us to be responsive to community need year-round, collaborate with other funders and work with donors, who may wish to support specific causes outside of this contestable application period.

Our approach to funding

  • Connected

At Nikau, we believe in building authentic, meaningful and trust-based relationships with and between communities. By connecting communties, we believe we can implement solutions that are impactful and fit-for-purpose.

  • Flexible

Each with different visions, structures, service delivery models and stages of establishment, we know that every organisation has different funding needs. Whether you need help to cover operating costs, to cover training expenses, buy key items or contribute to salaries, we may be able to help.

  • Collaborative

To ensure our funding is as impactful and informed as possible, we collaborate with donors, our local committee members and other funders to share knowledge and ideas, and co-fund where possible.

  • Accessible + streamlined

There are so many challenges that come with working or volunteering in the for-purpose sector. In our opinion, applying or reporting shouldn’t be one of them! Due to this, we aim to make our funding expereinces as inclusive, accessible and streamlined as possible so you can spend less time in forms and more time doing the mahi!

  • Informed

For us, building knowledge and engaging with the challenges facing our communities is crucial to funding in a practical, relevant and meaningful way. We are focused on building this knowledge through connection and kōrero.

  • Transparent

We aim to play our part in reducing the funding burden through clear, concise and transparent communications at every touchpoint of our funding and reporting processes.

  • Strengthening

Nikau acknowledges the for-purpose sector as a game-changer for our communities. Where we can, we aim to contribute to its strength and growth through capability building and funding initiatives that have a ripple effect sector-wide.

  • Future-focused

As a community foundation, Nikau has a mission to grow local generosity to support local causes, long-term. By engaging with donors to create futureproofed charitable legacies, we are actively building the funding pool year-on-year.
