Growing generosity to support the people and places of Te-Upoko-o-te-Ika-a-Maui, the Greater Wellington region, forever.

Impacful, meaningful funding.

  • 2024 funding wrap-up

2024 was an interesting year for the for-purpose sector. With the ongoing effects of COVID-19, economic downturns and redirected government funding creating a perfect storm for under-resourced communities, the sector faced many challenges. In such challenging times, Nikau’s approach was underpinned by connection to the community, funding priority areas and helping with ‘the basics’.

  • Innovative local solutions to address food insecurity.

100 years ago, community food support may have only been associated with lines snaking out of soup kitchens. In the 21st century, addressing food insecurity has produced a range of innovative, varied and hyper-local solutions that are anchored with manaakitanga (generosity/caring for others), collaboration and people power.

  • Building capability across the for-purpose sector

As a community foundation, Nikau plays a role in funding individual organisations as well as strengthening the for-purpose sector as a whole. This year, we funded a series of capability-building projects that will have a ripple effect for our communities.

Growing generosity, forever.

  • 2024 philanthropy wrap-up

As a community foundation with an intergenerational model, we are often asked about the future of philanthropy. What role will it play? What lessons have we learned? How can we do things better? With communities struggling, we now have an important opportunity to reflect and reimagine generosity so that it contributes to a stronger and more resilient future for our communities.

  • Legacy of Wellington community champion to continue.

During his lifetime, former Wellington City Councillor, Joe Aspell MBE, rarely spoke about the things he did for others. Instead, the stories of Joe’s generosity were shared by others: By the family who were loaned a house deposit so they could remain living there; the many individuals who benefited from alcohol and drug dependence support at Aspell House; and thousands of Wellington youth who have been supported through the Joe Aspell Trust, and now, through Nikau’s Joe Aspell Fund.

  • Mobilising Wellingtonians in the fight against Parkinson’s.

Cure Parkinson's NZ's mission is to find a cure for Parkinson's disease by funding, fueling and shaping research. All donations made to the Cure Parkinson's NZ Wellington Fund will be responsibly invested, grown and protected to support all aspects of Cure Parkinson's NZ's work from crucial research, advocacy, community awareness and education.
