Transformative support to help feed hungry bellies.
Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) has a mission to foster collaboration in our communities to reduce inequities and combat food insecurity. Collaborating with 21 agencies in the Porirua region, including local schools, Plunket, foodbanks, WellFED and social service providers, KCA works to source, process and redistribute surplus food and household goods to frontline agencies assisting those in need.
In early 2025, KCA sought funding to support the salaries of their General Manager and warehouse storeman. These roles are crucial to KCA’s operations. While the General Manager builds relationships with agencies and donors, develops new sources for food donations, ensures the service they deliver is meeting the needs of the communities and coordinates all volunteers, the storeman ensures that their operations run safely and smoothly.
Nīkau was proud to support, providing a grant co-funded by the Porirua District Fund and Richard and Doreen Evans Charitable Trust. With help to support these key roles, KCA redistributed an incredible 60,701 kilograms of food throughout the Porirua region, helping to support over 20,000 people experiencing food insecurity between early July and early October 2025.
“We are incredibly grateful to Nīkau Foundation for your support, which has played a critical role in allowing us to maintain business continuity over the winter months,” says General Manager, Tracy Wellington.
“This period has been particularly challenging, with a significant number of our regular volunteers away due to illness and seasonal bugs,” says Tracy. “Thanks to your funding, we were able to continue our food rescue operations without interruption, ensuring that vulnerable members of our community did not go without support during a time of heightened need six days a week.”
