A leader in environmental conservation.
The brainchild of former Wellington Zookeeper and conservation enthusiast, Peter McKenzie, the Ngā Manu Trust was established in 1974.
Recognising the opportunity to establish a location that embraced the ideas of preservation, conservation and education, McKenzie began the search for a suitable plot of land. What he found was a 14-hectare parcel of land, which contained a tiny remnant of rare lowland swamp forest surrounded by farmland, located just north of Waikanae.
At the time, the land was in poor condition and it took Peter and his team seven years to establish a thriving coastal lowland swamp ecosystem for native flora and fauna to flourish. Peter's vision was to protect the forest, restore the wetland ecosystem and establish breed for release programmes to supplement biodiversity at Ngā Manu and other sites around New Zealand.
Inspiring meaningful connection with nature.
Today, Ngā Manu is a leader in environmental conservation in Aotearoa New Zealand, inspiring a love and appreciation of nature for thousands of visitors and participating in many restoration and breed-for-release programmes with organisations such as the Department of Conservation and the Zoo and Aquarium Association.
Now 50-years into their story, Peter McKenzie’s vision for Ngā Manu remains strong, with the Trust playing a transformative role in promoting kaitiakitangā (guardianship) of New Zealand native plants and animals and providing welcoming, accessible spaces for people to connect with, learn about and discover nature.
Contributing to real conservation outcomes, forever.
Although the Ngā Manu Trust’s role includes securing funding to support the day-to-day, they also focus on angitūtangā - ensuring that Ngā Manu Reserve flourishes and remains a strong, financially and environmentally sustainable eco-tourism business long into the future. The Ngā Manu Endowment Fund was established with Nikau Foundation in 2017 to build a sustainable, long-term source of funding to support Ngā Manu Nature Reserve for generations to come.
Grants from the Ngā Manu Endowment Fund will support the Reserve in a number of ways, from helping to deliver public education initiatives to encourage connection and engagement with nature, supporting maintenance and development of the Reserve, and operations, to ensure Ngā Manu Nature Reserve can continue to inspire guardianship of Aotearoa’s native flora and fauna long into the future.
“Having long-term funding support from the Ngā Manu Endowment Fund means that Ngā Manu Nature Reserve can continue to remain a leader in the conservation and restoration of Aotearoa’s native plants and animals. All gifts given to the Ngā Manu Endowment Fund are invested and grown to support Ngā Manu Nature Reserve long into the future.”
